AE is the transient acoustic stress-wave that results from changes in materials. On a large scale earthquakes are AE, releasing gigajoules of energy, at the other end of the scale is dislocation slip in metals, releasing attojoules (10-18). The frequency range and sensitivity of sensors and instrumentation sold by Physical Acoustics cover the entire range, and many application specific systems and technology packages are available for monitoring and testing.
AE is used to test and monitor many materials including rock, concrete, metals, ceramics, wood, glass, kevlar, and carbon composites, bone, and coatings. AE tells you what is happening inside materials, real-time, and is used to test and monitor a wide range of structures in a broad range of industries. Even corrosion causes AE, forming the basis of field applications to storage tanks and process equipment. Our experience on structures includes continuous remote monitoring of offshore platforms, nuclear plant, pressure systems and storage tanks, bridges, and composite aerospace structures.

In addition to the “material-based” uses, AE instrumentation is used for a wide range of other applications. This is because of its high sensitivity, and ability to discriminate the signals of interest from background process noise. “Non-material” AE applications include acoustic leak detection, loose parts detection in nuclear plant, loose particle detection in cavity semiconductors, impact detection, sand monitoring in oil production, control of mixing, machining, and welding processes, partial discharge and other fault detection in power transformers and electrical switches.

Physical Acoustics instrumentation is in use sub-sea, in high radiation and high hazard environments, in laboratories, and in outer space. We also design and build custom sensors and instrumentation for OEM customers.
